The sculpture SPRACHROHR (Mouthpiece) embodies not only the human right to freedom of expression, it also encourages the practical exercise of this right.

And not just in some commentary lines of the social media, but quite real, personal and interactive here in the public space of Nelson Mandela Square in Nürnberg.

What concerns, what words are really worth calling into the world?

Appearance and material

Rough and robust on the outside, shiny gold on the inside and noble in quality. This is how the bronze sculpture appears when approaching. In the evening, it shines mysteriously from the inside out.

The traditional technique of bronze casting is deliberately turned inside out. The casting-related roughness is usually hidden inside bronze sculptures. Here, however, it is visibly turned outward as an robust protective crust.

The meaningful part of the sculpture SPRACHROHR is actually the valuable inside. The shiny gold interior reflects Mandela’s famous speech of the “precious words”.

Inscription

As an inscription on the base of the sculpture, I propose the closing words of Mandela’s defense speech of 1964: “It is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

Mandela was convinced throughout his life that this speech saved him from the death penalty. The speech went down in history as one of the most important speeches of the 20th century. The words should be inscribed in the bronze by SPRACHROHR (Mouthpiece)  without explanation and without specifying the author.

Participation and interaction

The sensible use of such a mouthpiece here in the newly designed urban space is certainly not a self-runner. Spontaneous love songs and wild poetry but certainly also political opinions up to wild public abuse are to be expected. A kind of informal speaker’s corner is possible.

Clearly: The occasional bawling can not be ruled out. But this is to be tolerated in inner-city coexistence as well as expressions of opinions that deviate from their own.

The high-quality execution and the inscription can support a conscious and respectful use of the interactive artwork.

The sculpture project SPRACHROHR (Mouthpiece)  is an experiment with an open outcome.

Die Skulptur SPRACHROHR verkörpert nicht nur das Menschenrecht auf freie Meinungsäusserung, sie ermutigt auch die praktische Ausübung dieses Rechtes.

Und zwar nicht nur in irgendwelchen Kommentarzeilen der virtuellen Netzwerke, sondern ganz real, persönlich und interaktiv hier im öffentlichen Raum des Nelson-Mandela-Platzes.

Welche Anliegen, welche Worte sind es aber wirklich wert in die Welt gerufen zu werden?

Erscheinung und Material

Aussen rau und robust, innen gold-glänzend und von edler Wertigkeit. So erschließt sich die Bronzeskulptur beim Näherkommen. Abends leuchtet sie geheimnisvoll von innen heraus.

Die traditionelle Technik des Bronzeguss wird hier bewusst von innen nach aussen gestülpt. Das gusstechnisch bedingte Raue ist ja bei Bronzeskulpturen überlicherweise im Inneren verborgen. Hier wird es aber als unempfindlicher Schutzmantel sichtbar nach aussen gekehrt.

Die eigentliche Schauseite der Skulptur SPRACHROHR ist die wertvolle Innenseite. Das gold-glänzende Innere reflektiert gleichsam Mandelas berühmte Rede von den „precious words“.
Inschrift
Als Inschrift auf dem Standfuß der Skulptur schlage ich das Schlusswort von Mandelas Verteidigungsrede von 1964 vor: „it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.“

Mandela war zeitlebens davon überzeugt, dass diese Rede ihn vor der Todesstrafe bewahrt hat. Die Rede ging als eine der wichtigsten Reden des 20. Jh. in die Geschichte ein. Die Worte sollen ohne Erklärung und ohne Angabe des Urhebers in die Bronze von SPRACHROHR eingeschrieben werden.

Partizipation und Interaktion

Die sinnvolle Nutzung so eines Sprachrohres hier im neu zu gestaltenden Stadtraum wird sicher kein Selbstläufer. Spontane Liebesgesänge und wilde Poesie aber gewiss auch politische Meinungsäusserungen bis hin zu wüsten Publikumsbeschimpfungen sind zu erwarten. Eine Art informeller Speaker‘s Corner ist möglich.

Ganz klar: Das gelegentliche Grölen ist nicht auszuschließen. Das ist im innerstädtischen Miteinander aber ebenso zu tolerieren wie Äußerungen von Meinungen, die von der eigenen abweichen.

Die hochwertige Gestaltung und die Inschrift können einen bewußten und respektvollen Umgang mit dem interaktiven Kunstwerk unterstützen.

Das Skulpturprojekt SPRACHROHR ist ein Experiment mit offenem Ausgang.
